WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Mountain Trax started in 1995 as a small mail order bike company selling a huge range of products usually only seen in cycling magazines. The original owners started out running the business from home on a part-time basis, however it was such a success they soon ran out of space. So the following year they opened a shop in a retail unit at the local Wyevale Garden Centre, near Crowthorne. While selling everything from entry level to top-of-the-range bikes, the Mountain Trax ethos was always to make customers feel welcome and at ease, avoiding the cliquey feel of some high-end bike shops, which many people find intimidating. Fast forward to March 2005 when Chris White, who had been working at Mountain Trax for seven years, bought the business. He continued to develop it, adding a specialist workshop with two full time-mechanics providing an exceptional standard of repairs and custom builds. In June 2007 we moved to our current base in Barkham Grange, which offers 3,500 feet of showroom and workshop space as well as dedicated free parking.

Our Experts

Paul Howard – Owner

During 2020 Paul bought the business from Chris White as a going concern. Chris owned the shop since 2005 and the time in life came for him to pursue new ventures. We have both enjoyed working together for 12 years and now the shop remains in good hands under Paul's ownership. Before joining Mountain Trax in 2008, Paul worked in the hi-tech electronics industry for around 20 years, running customer support and technical publication groups. However he had already been a key member of our race team for five years when he came on board. If Chris is the ideas man, Paul is the detail man. Between them they have developed the business into what it is today. He is also a qualified Fit Kit Systems bike fitter. Paul used to be a dab hand at long-distance riding, excelling in 6, 12 and 24 hour solo races. Today he’s more likely to be seen thrashing round his local trails or racing cross country in the Grand Veterans class. He has far too many bikes to mention, but his favourites are the Santa Cruz Blur for xc, an Evil Wreckoning for trail riding, and an Orro Terra Carbon gravel bike for commuting, gravel and bikepacking.

Brad Wilson – Sales

Brad joined in 2018 bringing many years of cycle retail experience and bike fitting skills. He's a keen road cyclist and regularly competes in Triathlon, Ironman and time trials. His go to rides are both from Orro; Venturi aero road bike setup with aero bars, and Terra Carbon Gravel for commuting and offroad duties.

Olly Parsons – Service Centre Mechanic

Olly joined in 2017 and is our lead mechanic. His "can do attitude" to servicing means there is nothing he can't fix. On the bike you'll find Olly making the most of uplift days riding his Santa Cruz Megatower at Forest of Dean, Bike Park Wales et al.

James Shephard – Service Centre Mechanic & Marketing

James's passion is restoring classic Triumph Dolomites, from welding, to wiring, engine rebuilds, painting, the lot. These skills transfer to an excellent bike mechanic with a great problem solving ability. His corporate background in the city brings a wealth of marketing skills and so he's responsible for our social media outlets.

Part-time Staff

We’re supported by enthusiastic part-time staff in sales and service, all of whom ride or race. Typically at school or college, around their studies we train them in everything bike related.
