A Little History
Mountain Trax started in 1995 as a small mail order bike company selling a huge range of products usually only seen in cycling magazines. The original owners started out running the business from home on a part-time basis, however it was such a success they soon ran out of space. So the following year they opened a shop in a retail unit at the local Wyevale Garden Centre, near Crowthorne. While selling everything from entry level to top-of-the-range bikes, the Mountain Trax ethos was always to make customers feel welcome and at ease, avoiding the cliquey feel of some high-end bike shops, which many people find intimidating. Fast forward to March 2005 when Chris White, who had been working at Mountain Trax for seven years, bought the business. He continued to develop it, adding a specialist workshop with two full time-mechanics providing an exceptional standard of repairs and custom builds. In June 2007 we moved to our current base in Barkham Grange, which offers 3,500 feet of showroom and workshop space as well as dedicated free parking.
Our Experts
Paul Howard – Owner
Update: 1st December 2020 - Mountain Trax Under New Ownership. Paul bought the business from Chris White as a going concern. Chris owned the shop since 2005 and the time in life came for him to pursue new ventures. We have both enjoyed working together for 12 years and now the shop remains in good hands under Paul's ownership.
Before joining Mountain Trax in 2008, Paul worked in the hi-tech electronics industry for around 20 years, running customer support and technical publication groups. However he had already been a key member of our race team for five years when he came on board. If Chris is the ideas man, Paul is the detail man. Between them they have developed the business into what it is today. He is also a qualified Fit Kit Systems bike fitter.
Paul used to be a dab hand at long-distance riding, excelling in 6, 12 and 24 hour solo races. Today he’s more likely to be seen thrashing round his local trails or racing cross country in the Veterans class, proving that 29ers are far from slow. He has far too many bikes to mention, but his favourites are the Evil Wreckoning for trail riding, and an Orro Terra Carbon custom build.
Brad Wilson – Sales
Brad joined in 2018 bringing many years of cycle retail experience and bike fitting skills. He's a keen road cyclist and regularly competes in Triathlon and the occasional half Ironman.
Olly Parsons – Service Centre Mechanic
Olly also joined in 2017 and is focused on mountain bike servicing, with a specialism in forks and shocks. Olly mostly rides mtb's but enjoys a quick dabble on the road bike.
Part-time Staff
We’re supported by enthusiastic part-time staff, all of whom ride or race. They are all at school or college and, around their studies, we train them in everything bike related.
